Student Frequently Asked Questions

1. How are the events during the week different from the events on Saturday?

The workshops and events during the week are career discussions on general subject matters that are important in the lives of students. These programs dig deeper into career decision-making and life during and after Duke. They're a chance to sit back and reflect on important personal issues and concerns. The panel discussions on Saturday are organized by career field and participants can learn more about specific careers, while networking with alumni in those fields. Plenty of time is built in for making connections.

2. Why should I attend the events during Duke Career Week?

We are certain that you will learn something new from all the programs and it will be an awesome opportunity to get to know people in a low-key environment! We will have some high profile (as well as some recent) alumni coming to share their experiences with you and they will want to meet and talk with lots of students. All those coming back have been selected because they're interested in helping students on career issues.

3. When can I register for Duke Career Week?

Registration will begin on Monday, January 2, 2006.

4. How do I register for Duke Career Week?

You will need to register on the Duke Career Week web site. A registration button will appear on Monday, January 2, 2006.

5. Do I have to attend all of the events during Duke Career Week?

No. You choose the workshops you want to attend throughout the week. If you have trouble deciding which workshops to attend, we recommend speaking with someone from the Career Center. Since space for many programs is limited, we ask that you only sign up for programs you definitely plan to attend, and that you cancel your registration(s) if your plans change.

6. How do I edit my registration form?

Your confirmation e-mail will give you an opportunity to change, cancel, or add to your registration. Please keep this email!

7. What is the schedule for the day?

8. Where will Duke Career Week programs take place?

Programs during the week will be sprinkled throughout West campus and some will take place on East campus. The main location on Saturday will be in the Bryan Center but all workshops that day will be sprinkled throughout main West campus.

9. Do I have to pay for this?

No. The only exception is the Wine Tasting & Etiquette dinner. This program is reserved for Seniors only and is $25.00.

10. Am I expected to attend the meals (breakfast, opening remarks, Keynote lunch, and networking receptions)?

We strongly encourage you to attend these events because that is often the best time to network and to get your one-on-one questions answered. However, we're limited in how many people we can accommodate, so sign up early, and don't forget to set your alarm!

11. How are the panels structured?

Time will be allotted for panelists to introduce themselves and to address the workshop topics. In addition, time is built in for questions from participants and more time for individual and group networking.

12. What panels will be represented?

Click here for a list of workshops

13. What will participants know about the panelists/moderators?

Click here for a list of panelists and moderators biographies. We encourage you to contact them in advance if you'd like to meet with them individually while they're on campus or after the event.

14. What should I wear to the programs?

For programs during the week, dress is casual. We encourage you to wear business casual attire on Saturday but it is not required.

15. Who is responsible for Duke Career Week?

Duke Alumni Association, Alumni affairs, and Duke Career Center are all responsible for Career Week. We couldn't do it, however, without the help of a multitude of students, staff and faculty. We are enormously grateful for funding received from a number of sources, listed on the front page of the Career Week website.
