Whose Career is it Anyway? (McClendon Tower 2,5)
POSTPONED

Have you always wanted to be a doctor, lawyer, or banker? Now that you’re in college, have you stepped back and looked at these dreams and really examined them? Do they still fit with your values and interests? Are you following some other person’s notion of a “good career” for a Duke graduate? Can you reconcile your career plans with the kind of life you want to have? Will you be able to have the free time you need to pursue outside interests or balance an active family life? Can you do what you want and still pay the bills? These are tough questions and there are no easy answers. Often there are trade-offs involved. Our panelists will take you down their paths – along with their successes and mistakes.
Tuesday, January 27th
8:30 pm - 9:45 pm
Bookbag to Briefcase (McClendon Tower 2,5)
POSTPONED

Graduation is right around the corner and you are feeling a bit anxious about leaving your nest at Duke. For the past several years, housing and utilities were paid for by your parents, financial aid, or student loans; you can swipe your card for meals; and, your only real worries have been making the grade. The transition to real life can be tough if you are not properly prepared for it. You think you know what it would be like…but the vision is a little fuzzy. This panel of recent graduates will focus on the transition from school to work. They will educate you on such mundane matters as taxes, insurance, unscrupulous landlords, and dating.

Career Discussion Panels
Difference in the Workplace
How and why does diversity (ethnic, sexual orientation, gender, etc.) add value to the workplace? What are some challenges people face being the "minority" in the workplace? How do people handle these challenges and contribute to a positive environment, which celebrates differences? This workshop will equip you with invaluable knowledge as you enter the workforce and it is relevant to all students - whether or not you identify yourself as a minority.

Entrepreneurship
The word Entrepreneurship congers up visions of doing whatever you like whenever you like; not having to tell your boss that you would like to start work everyday at 2:00pm and, making a ton of money. But what is the reality? What characteristics are most important for success, and what do you need to know before you put that great new idea to the ultimate test.

International Work
Are you interested in an ‘international’ career? What does that mean? For some it means working overseas. But, you also can work in the U.S. on global issues whether in policy, security, commerce, trade, communication, social responsibility, education, law, or research. What can you do now to prepare yourself to do work with an international perspective? Panelists will discuss their career path and insight on how to get your foot in the door.

CANCELLED -- Internationals Working in the U.S.
This program is intended for current international students who may be seeking employment in the U.S. after they graduate. The workshop will feature alumni who were once in the same situation and will share their job search experience. We will also cover some technical aspects of the job search for international grads such as visa issues and legal questions.

Off the Beaten Path
Sometimes life pushes us in a direction least expected or paths that we never intended to travel. Sometimes we fall off, sometimes the path is bumpy or curvy but somehow, the path begins to straighten out. The alumni on this panel are people who have unusual stories to tell. How did they end up where they are today? This program may offer you insight about a career you have never thought about or thought would be possible!

People People
Do you enjoy working with people? Or do you just know that whatever you do it must involve working with people? This panel of alums have the same interest and will share their experiences of what they do, how they interact with people through their work, and why they love what they do.

So You Want to Get a Ph.D.
Whether you've considered applying to a Ph.D. program soon or later, you'll want to get the perspective of our Ph.D. alums to help you assess what advanced study is for, whether you have the right stuff to complete the degree, and your options for employment afterward.

Women in Leadership
Women, these days, are doing some amazing things. How do they balance it all? What are their keys to success? What are the costs? This program will feature alumni women who have major leadership responsibilities and have broken the glass ceiling.
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm Reception: Meet the Alumni (Bryan Center)
All alumni panelists and moderators are invited to this event. We encourage you to get to know them!
